Bantu Mzwakali of Ajax Cape Town gets to the ball ahead of Adrien Silva of Sporting Lisbon during the 2015 Cape Town Cup game between Ajax Cape Town and Sporting Lisbon at Cape Town Stadium, Cape Town on 24 July 2015
Ajax Cape Town will have to do everything in their power to claim the third spot of the inaugural Cape Town Cup as they face SuperSport United in the third/fourth place play-off match on Sunday afternoon.
Although the Urban Warriors lost to Sporting Club de Portugal 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw, coach Roger De Sa remains proud of his boys saying they matched their opponents.
However, the young Ajax team will have to rectify their mistakes and ensure they protect their lead as they face Amatsantsantsa A Pitori who are still licking their wounds after their 4-0 drubbing by Crystal Palace.
De Sa’s men could’ve wrapped up the match after they took the 2-1 lead against Sporting in the dying minutes of the match, but Franklin Cale missed a glorious chance only to allow Sporting to bounce back and secure a draw when Ruben Semedo equalised to take the game to penalties.
Bantu Mzwakali, Rivaldo Coetzee and Granwald Scott will be expected to continue with their never say die attitude hoping to claim the bronze medal.
Speaking after the match, De Sa said he’s disappointed to have lost the match but he will be going all out on Sunday.
"I am obviously disappointed when you go 2-1 up and let it slip in the end, to concede from a set piece like we did," De Sa says.
“Ideally you want to play teams you do not get a chance to play often, like Crystal Palace.
"So I am slightly disappointed there. But on Sunday we will go out and give it a full go against SuperSport United."
On the other hand, Gordon Igesund will have to ensure his troops are ready and pick up the pieces as they face a fellow PSL side.
The ex-Bafana Bafana coach will hope his key players such as skipper, Thuso Phala, Lebogang Manyama and the experienced Bongani Khumalo are in high spirits ahead of the match.
The match is scheduled to get underway at 13:00 at the Cape Town Stadium.
Ajax, Supersport United share third place in Cape Town Cup
A late strike by Ajax Cape Town’s Travis Graham denied SuperSport United the win to claim the third place of the inaugural Cape Town Cup as they played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at Cape Town Stadium.
Although United were still licking their wounds from their 4-0 rout at the hands of Crystal Palace on Friday night, the Tshwane side was the first one to move forward showing hunger to win the match.
After 10 minutes of play without a goal, Gordon Igesund’s men moved forward exchanging good passes and it was the skipper, Thuso Phala who found the back of the net in the 15th minute.
The hosts failed to deal with a cross the right as Bradley Grobler rose alone but the keeper, Jody February made a brilliant save, however, Phala was unmarked to easily tap it in.
The Urban Warriors could not find an equaliser in the first-half as they tried to push forward in numbers as one could say it was different Ajax fielded by coach Roger De Sa.
However, in the second-half, the introduction of players such as Graham and Olwethu Nguye gave the Capetonians some strength.
The Urban Warriors came close to find an equaliser when they hit the woodwork with Ronwen Williams beaten hands down from a beautiful cross by skipper, Franklin Cale.
Just after the 80th mark, as time was running out for De Sa’s men it was substitute Phumelele Bhengu who gave the Capetonians tough times as he managed to break free but his attempt was saved February on the near post.
After the referee added four minutes, Ajax found an equaliser through Graham following a beautiful delivery by Franklin Cale. He managed to outjump Clayton Daniels and beat Dumisani Msibi who replaced Williams.
Again with seconds remaining, the former Thanda Royal Zulu forward managed to trick the Ajax defence and faced February who stood his ground as Bhengu failed to hit the target as the referee signalled the end of the match.
