SuperSport United CEO Stanley Matthews thinks that Matsatsantsa winger Thuso Phala is a perfect candidate to stake a claim for an overseas move during the inaugural Cape Town Cup.

SuperSport will play Crystal Palace at the Cape Town Stadium on July 24, and will then face either Ajax Cape Town or Sporting Lisbon on July 26, at the same venue.

Matthews feels that there are several candidates in the SuperSport side who could grab the attention of scouts or technical team members from the two European clubs, and has singled out Bafana Bafana and former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns wide man Phala as one of them.

“We look in our squad, and we do think we have one or two players who can play at the highest level,” said Matthews.

“This is the stage for the guys to step up and show what they can do. I was speaking to Thuso Phala, who is by all accounts one of our leading players, and a player with his pace and his talent and his international caps, he does have the capacity to play at a higher level in Europe.

“So if he’s ever going to have a motivation and an opportunity to step out and show what he can do, he’s going to have that opportunity now. Hopefully he’ll grab it, and maybe we we’ll even have one or two surprises, that step up on the day.”
