SuperSport United head coach Gordon Igesund has announced that Thuso Phala has taken over as the captain of the club ahead of the 2015/16 Premier Soccer League season.

The former Platinum Stars wide man skippered Matsatsantsa as they suffered a 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the opening game of the inaugural Cape Town Cup on Friday evening.

Clayton Daniels, who started at the right-back against the Eagles, wore the armband last season - successfully leading the club to Telkom Knockout glory.

“The previous captain did very well last season and I was happy with his contribution, but he doesn’t have to wear the armband to be a leader on the field,” Igesund is quoted as saying.

“Bongani Khumalo is also a leader … there’s a lot of leaders in my team.

“I just felt that Thuso Phala deserves the opportunity to be given more responsibility and he has had a fantastic three years, including the last two years with us. He has done very well and he’ll lead the team for us for the new season.”
